2,300 mph
A Cold War-era SR-71 pilot recounts what it’s like to fly the fastest plane ever built: One day, high above Arizona , we were monitoring the radio traffic of all the mortal airplanes below us. First, a Cessna pilot asked the air traffic controllers to check his ground speed. ‘Ninety knots,’ ATC replied. A twin Bonanza soon made the same request. ‘One-twenty on the...

New Tumblr finds
Followed a couple new Tumblogs today: Mad Men Footnotes anyone who knows me, knows i (probably annoyingly) reference this show a lot. Movies in Frames movies captured in 4 frames. haven’t found a spoiler yet, but check it out. Movie Score(s) a Day not really “in” to movie scores, but there’s no reason not to learn more. Making of sorry, another film-related...

Wisdom of Crowds
Match the photos below, taken from the National Mall, to the dates below: 1/20/09 9/12/09 The left photo was taken a block closer to the capitol, but I promise you aren’t missing anything going on behind me besides an intense game of ultimate frisbee.

Making moves
You may have seen on Twitter, but in just a few short weeks, I’ll be leaving our nation’s capitol, to take a new job in Charleston, SC. Hard to believe, but it’s already been 15 months since I came to DC… not really sure how that happened, it seems like I just arrived. So anyway, more updates to come of course, I’m hoping to make appearances around here more...

World's obviousest
From NYT: The [National Advertising Division of the BBB] therefore recommended that Apple modify its “world’s greenest family of notebooks” claim, “to make clearer that the basis of comparison is between all MacBooks to all notebooks made by a given competitor.” It also suggested that Apple “avoid the reference to ‘world’s greenest’ — given the potential for overstatement.” Apple? ...

Toy Story 3, coming June 18, 2010. I had to check twice to make sure that the 1995 release date of the original “Toy Story” was correct. In fact, so much has happened since then that the newest incarnation will be shown in Disney Digital 3D (which premiered in theaters this weekend in “Up”). Click here to watch the trailer (strongly recommend 1080p).

Sotomayored
Ezra Klein’s got it right, Obama won’t see any problems with his nomination of Sonia Sotomayor, mostly because her last name can’t be turned into a verb. The last nominee to actually be defeated — Harriett Miers was withdrawn, remember, and withdrawn due to conservative unrest — was Robert Bork. A quick Google gets me here: William Safire defines “to...

WTC 2.0
After 9/11, Ji Lee began photographing logos featuring the Twin Towers around NYC, most of which are bound to disappear as the logos change or businesses shutter. Enter, WTC Logo Preservation Project. The nostalgic in me loves the logos including the towers, but the change is probably inevitable, if not preferable. [via Logo Design Love]

Making friends with the beer guy
I did not get a chance to go to a Nationals game last season* after moving to DC, but I can safely say that the chances of my going to a game this season went up today. Introducing, the beer list for the 2009 season at Nationals Park: Bottles: Budweiser, Bud Light, Miller Genuine Draft, Miller Lite, Coors Light, Bell’s Oberon American Wheat Ale, Harpoon Summer Ale. Draft: Peroni,...
